Enabling Language Detection
Allow your AI agent to automatically detect and respond in the caller's language.
Overview
Language Detection enables your AI agent to:
- Identify the language a caller is speaking
- Automatically switch to respond in that language
- Use the appropriate voice for each language This creates a seamless experience for international callers who may speak different languages.
Prerequisites
Before enabling Language Detection:
- You must have additional languages configured
- Each enabled language must have a voice assigned
Enabling Language Detection
- Navigate to Agent Settings > Voice & Languages
- Click Manage Languages to open the configuration sheet
- Locate the Language Detection toggle
- Turn it ON
- Click Save Changes
How It Works
When Language Detection is enabled:
- Caller speaks - Your AI listens to the caller's first utterances
- Language identified - The system detects which language is being spoken
- Voice switches - If the detected language is one of your enabled languages, the AI switches to that language's assigned voice
- Conversation continues - The AI responds in the detected language
💡 Note: Language detection works best when callers speak clearly in their language from the start of the call. Mixed-language conversations may not always trigger a switch.
Supported Languages
Language detection works for any language you have enabled with a voice assignment. Common supported languages include:
- English (various accents)
- Spanish
- French
- German
- Japanese
- Chinese (Mandarin)
- Hindi
- Arabic
- And more
When to Use Language Detection
Enable it if:
You serve an international customer base
Callers speak various languages
You want to provide localized experiences automatically Consider disabling if:
All your callers speak the same language
You prefer consistent single-language responses
Your business operates in only one region
Troubleshooting
Language not being detected
- Ensure the language is enabled in your configuration
- Verify a voice is assigned to that language
- Caller may be speaking too briefly or unclearly
Wrong language detected
- Some languages sound similar at the start of conversation
- The caller may be speaking a dialect or accent variation
