Upgrading your Speako plan gives you more voice minutes, locations, and team members. Upgrades take effect immediately and you only pay the prorated difference for the remainder of your current billing period.
How to Upgrade
- Go to Dashboard โ Billing & Usage
- Click the Upgrade Plan button in the top right corner
- Select the plan you'd like to upgrade to
- Confirm the upgrade and complete payment Your new plan features are available immediately after the upgrade is confirmed.
Prorated Billing
When you upgrade mid-cycle, Speako uses prorated billing โ you only pay for the price difference for the remaining days in your current billing period.
Example
Say you're on the Advance plan (160 minutes, A$99/month) and upgrade to the Pro plan (320 minutes, A$199/month) halfway through your billing cycle:
- Charge: You pay 50% of the price difference (A$50) for the remaining half of the cycle
- Minutes added: You receive 50% of the extra minutes (80 minutes) for this cycle
- Next cycle: Starting from your next billing date, you'll receive the full 320 minutes and pay the full Pro plan price
๐ก Tip: The prorated minutes are added to your current balance immediately. You don't need to wait until the next billing cycle to use them.
Understanding Your Usage Display After an Upgrade
After a mid-cycle upgrade, your Billing page and sidebar usage card show your effective minutes for the current cycle โ not the full plan quota.
What You'll See
Using the example above (Advance โ Pro at 50% of cycle, 160 minutes already used):
| Value | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Used | 160 | Minutes consumed so far this cycle |
| Total shown | 240 | Effective total for this cycle (160 original + 80 prorated) |
| Remaining | 80 | Minutes available until cycle resets |
| Resets note | "Resets [date] with 320 minutes" | Your full plan quota starting next cycle |
This means the total displayed (240 in this example) may be less than your new plan quota (320). This is expected โ it reflects what's actually available for the current billing period.
Why Not Show the Full Plan Quota?
The prorated amount depends on when in the billing cycle you upgraded. If you upgrade on day 1, you get nearly the full extra minutes. If you upgrade on the last day, you get very few extra minutes for this cycle.
Showing the effective total ensures the numbers always match what's actually available to use. At your next billing cycle reset, the display returns to the full plan quota (e.g. 0 / 320).
What Happens to Extra Minute Packages
Extra minute packages you've purchased are not affected by plan upgrades. They remain in your account and are only used after your plan minutes are exhausted.
Deduction priority:
- Plan minutes are used first
- Extra package minutes are used only when plan minutes run out
After the Upgrade
- Your AI voice agent continues to work without interruption
- New plan limits (locations, team members) apply immediately
- The usage display updates automatically
- Your next invoice will reflect the full new plan price
Common Questions
Will I be double-charged?
No. Stripe calculates the prorated difference precisely. You'll only pay for the unused portion of your old plan applied towards the new plan price.
Can I upgrade from monthly to annual billing at the same time?
Yes. Annual billing saves you approximately 10% compared to monthly. The proration is calculated based on the remaining time in your current monthly cycle.
What if I upgrade and still run out of minutes?
You can purchase extra minute packages at any time. These are separate from your plan minutes and don't expire.
Can I downgrade after upgrading?
Downgrades take effect at the start of your next billing cycle to avoid disrupting your current service. See Downgrading Considerations for details.
