Table capacity tells Speako which party sizes can be seated at each table. Each table has a Min Capacity and a Max Capacity, giving you more control than a single seat count.

Use this carefully: capacity affects which tables are suitable for bookings, and it helps your team avoid seating a small party at a table you need to keep available for larger groups.

What Min Capacity means

Min Capacity is the smallest party size the table should normally be offered to.

For example:

  • A two-person table might have a min capacity of 1
  • A four-person table might have a min capacity of 2
  • A large booth might have a min capacity of 4

This does not physically change the table. It tells Speako when the table is a good match for a booking.

What Max Capacity means

Max Capacity is the largest party size the table can seat.

For example:

  • A small table might have a max capacity of 2
  • A standard table might have a max capacity of 4
  • A larger group table might have a max capacity of 8

The table list displays this as a Capacity Range, such as 2 - 4 guests.

Validation rules

When adding or editing a table, Speako checks that both capacity values are valid.

You'll see an error if:

  • Min Capacity is empty or not a positive number
  • Max Capacity is empty or not a positive number
  • Min Capacity is greater than Max Capacity

⚠️ Important: A table cannot be saved with a minimum capacity higher than its maximum capacity.

Choosing practical capacity ranges

Capacity ranges should reflect how you actually seat guests.

If your restaurant is relaxed about seating two guests at a four-top, use a low minimum such as 1 or 2. If you want to protect larger tables during peak service, use a higher minimum.

For example, a six-seat booth could be:

Situation Min Max
Flexible all-day seating 2 6
Reserved for larger parties 4 6
Strict group table 6 6

Capacity and floor-plan table shape

In the floor-plan editor, table shapes also have visual limits. The Edit Table panel shows Max Capacity and a Limit based on the current table shape and size. If the visual table is too small for a high seat count, Speako limits how far you can increase it from that panel.

For full capacity range editing, use the main Tables page.

Review after changes

After changing capacity, check upcoming restaurant bookings if the table is already being used. Capacity changes help future matching, but they do not automatically move or cancel existing bookings.
