Best Practices

Keep Titles Meaningful

  • Good: "Senior Massage Therapist" — Clear role and level
  • Poor: "Level 3" — Unclear what it means

Be Consistent

If you have multiple locations, use the same title names for consistency:

  • All locations call it "Senior Stylist" not "Master Stylist" at some and "Lead Stylist" at others

Don't Overdo It

  • Focus on titles that matter for booking and team organization
  • Avoid creating too many similar titles
  • Remove outdated titles

Reflect Actual Roles

Job titles should match what staff actually do:

  • Update titles when staff earn certifications
  • Promote titles when staff advance

Job Titles vs Services

Job titles and services serve different purposes:

Job Titles Services
Describe who the person is Describe what they do
Indicate expertise level Define bookable offerings
Visual identification Has duration and pricing

A "Senior Colorist" (job title) might offer "Full Color Service" and "Highlights" (services).
