The Web Chat Widget puts your AI receptionist on your own website — a floating button visitors tap to ask questions or make a booking. It answers from the same knowledge your voice agent uses, and one widget serves your whole business.
Before you start
You need:
- A website you can paste a small snippet of code into, just before the closing
</body>tag. Most website builders have a place for this, often called custom code, header/footer scripts, or embed code. - Your AI agent set up with knowledge, so it has something to answer from.
💡 Note: The widget is business-wide, not per location. If you have several locations, the widget asks the visitor which one they want when they start a booking — you don't need a separate widget for each.
Generating your widget key
The widget needs an API key to talk to Speako from your website.
- Go to Dashboard → Integrations.
- Under AI Messaging, click the Web Chat Widget card.
- In the Widget API key card, generate a key.
⚠️ Important: The key is shown once. Copy it straight away — you can't retrieve it later. If you lose it, use Regenerate key to create a new one (which replaces the old one).
Use the Copy button rather than selecting the text by hand, so you don't miss any characters.
Adding the widget to your site
The Embed snippet card contains the code to install.
- Click Copy on the embed snippet.
- In your website editor, paste it just before the closing
</body>tag. - Publish or save your site.
- Load your site in a browser — the launcher button appears in the corner.
💡 Tip: If your site has several page templates, paste the snippet into the shared footer or layout so it appears on every page rather than just the homepage.
Customising how it looks
All of these are on the same page, and changes apply to the live widget.
Branding — the name and colour shown across the widget. Pick one of the presets or set a Custom colour to match your brand.
Launcher button — the floating button visitors tap to open the chat. Adjust how it appears on your site.
Agent avatar — the face shown beside the assistant's replies.
Welcome screen — an optional intro shown before the conversation starts, so visitors know what they can ask. For example, a greeting like "Hi! Ask us anything, or book in a few taps." with a Start conversation button.
Testing it
Use the Test it live → link to open the widget exactly as a visitor sees it, without needing to publish your site first.
Try the things your customers will do:
- Ask a common question — the answer comes from your knowledge base.
- Say "I'd like to book" — the widget walks through the booking, asking which location if you have more than one.
If the widget doesn't appear on your own site, check that the snippet is inside the page and not in a comment, and that your site has actually been republished since you pasted it.
Turning the widget off
Click Revoke on the Widget API key card. You'll be asked to confirm:
"Revoke this widget key? The widget will stop working on your website until you generate a new one."
Revoking disables the widget immediately, everywhere the snippet is installed — visitors stop seeing the chat. The snippet can stay on your site harmlessly; generating a new key and updating the snippet brings it back.
Conversations that already happened remain in Speako, so you don't lose the history.
